    Description

    From my Medical Collection
    :  Here we have a
    CIVIL WAR Era,
    Antique,
    'Unmarked' Bloodletting,
    Glass Suction Collection Cup.
This glass cup is not marked by a maker which is typical for this type of medical device.  This is an early glass cup has all the attributes of those used in the field hospitals during the Civil War.
However I have no direct evidence of the used of this cup during the Civil War.
The old attributes are the rolled glass base is not perfectly round and the glass body has some minor swirls in it which is typical of the old molded type glass cups.  These medical devices were used from the 17th century until the late 1800's for both humans, as well as animals, with these smaller examples typically used for humans.
For hundreds of years it was believed that bleeding out some of the "bad" blood would help a person recover from illness or injury, and this even applied to animal care !!  A fleam was used to puncture
the skin over an area with a large vein. In the meantime this glass cup was heated and then placed over the punctured area.  As the cup cooled it created a seal to the skin around the puncture. A suction occurred as the cup cooled further and increased the removal of the 'bad blood'.   The glass cup has a minor chip on the top of the rolled base.  There are no cracks in the glass.  The cup is approx. 2" tall and has a 1-5/8" diameter base.
This is a great early piece that would add impact to your Civil War, or Antique Medical Collection !
